The annual Essex Association of Boys’ Club Kwik Cricket competition took place at the Eversley Centre in Basildon on Saturday 14th March 2009. Teams aged under 13 from Belhus CC, Maldon CC and Upminster CC competed in an afternoon of fast and exciting indoor cricket.
The competition was made up of a league of five teams followed by a final between the top two sides. An additional incentive was that the finalists are being invited to play at the County Ground in Chelmsford during the West Indies tourist match on Sunday 26th April.
In the group matches Upminster CC won their four matches. Maldon Mafia finished runners up with just one defeat. Belhus CC fielded two younger aged sides, as did Maldon Mayhem, and credit must go to them for spirited performances throughout the competition.
In the final Upminster CC bated first their first five batsmen all retiring on 15 runs in accordance with the rules. However they did return to enhance the score during the later overs. They finished on 160 for the loss of 3 wickets from 12 overs. Maldon mafia then went for the runs however, following run outs in their chase for victory Maldon fell short of the total and finished on 41 all out. Michael Foster was the pick of the batsmen.
A number of the players who attended will be attending trials for the Essex Association of Boys' Clubs U12 and U14 representative sides who will face fixtures against schools such as Eton, Harrow, Chigwell and Uppingham.
