Eastern Rhinos Rugby League Competition 2009

Eastern Rhinos Rugby League Club held their second annual schools competition with support from Essex Association of Boys’ Clubs at Colchester Rugby Club on Wednesday 3rd June.  Year 9 and 10 students from Colchester Royal Grammer School, the Boswells School, Thurstable School, St John Payne School and Colne Community School competed for the both the Overall Winners Trophy and the Plate Final Trophy.

 

After all teams competed in a League format, Colne Community School and Thurstable School, who finished 4th and 5th respectively competed in the Plate Eliminator game with Colne winning through to the Plate Final to play St John Payne School who finished 3rd in the league.  St John Payne won the final and with it the Plate Trophy, convincingly albeit after a brave display from the Colne students.  The Grand Final was played out between 1st placed Boswells and 2nd placed Colchester Royal Grammer School.  In a tightly contested affair Boswells superior defence shone through and they won the tie 4-0. 

 

Player of the competition was awarded to Jamie Cowie from the Boswells School for his tireless running and commitment throughout the matches.

 

It is hoped now that some of the competing players may go on to train and play for Eastern Rhinos as the club look to build for the future and expand awareness of Rugby League in the area.  Organiser and Rhinos Coach Pete LeMarquand said “It’s been a great advert for Rugby League in this area.  The boys have all represented their schools with pride and determination.  I am sure that with the help of new players, volunteers and sponsors we can really make an impact in Essex and beyond with Rugby League.
