Easter Challenge Cup

The Easter Cup took place in the Lake District over four days in the second week of the Easter holidays.  The Cup saw ten young people from our clubs compete for the coveted trophy!  Each team was set a series of challenges and activities that would test their team work, leadership abilities and above all determination.  The first activity saw the teams, under the cover of darkness try to evade capture whilst making it back through gorse and boggy ground to the safe zone half a kilometer from the start point.  The team from the Out There Club known as ‘the Puddle Finders’ took an early lead scoring a maximum of five points with the team from Colchester Senior Members Club aka ‘Ben’s Mum’ picking up the only other point scored in the game.

The canoeing on Derwent Water saw a change in fortunes for the competing teams.  Whilst ‘the puddle finders’ added to their opening score with another three points and the ‘MCK’s’ got off the mark with a top score of five.  ‘Bens mum’ however,  took to water like a duck to concrete and scored nothing after a disastrous paddle saw them struggle to keep up with the other teams and then capsize completely into the chilly waters of the Derwent!!

The night navigation was next up, the MCK’s now looking like serious contenders, took another maximum 5 points with Bens Mum picking up 3 and the Puddle Finders picking up 1.  The Mountain Day was up next which saw the teams navigate in to the tarn at the base of Sharp Edge on Blencathra.  After completing the Edge as a group the teams set off again, navigating their way down to complete the river crossing before heading up and over Carrock Fell and back to the centre.  All the teams scored highly, the MCK’s again picked up 5 points with the other two team taking 4 points each respectively.

This all meant that it would be decided on the Mountain Biking on the final morning of the competition.  Once again the MCK’s dominated and in recording the fastest time by ten seconds also secured the Easter Cup with a total of 23 points.  Congratulations to all the teams that took part and we look forward to seeing an equally competitive competition in 2010.
