Respect Project

The Respect Project is a four-month programme that is divided into activity days, evening sessions, an outdoor activity day, a weeklong residential experience of outdoor adventurous activities, and final presentation evening.

Aimed at boys and girls in school year 9, the young people are nominated by their school to take part in an activity day at Stubbers Adventure Centre. Up to 20 pupils will get a chance to take part in something like raft building, tunnelling or team challenges and they will have been recommended by their school because maybe they are struggling a bit with the education system, have little self confidence or low self esteem.  After the initial day at Stubbers 20 pupils are then invited back from the schools that have taken part, to attend a second activity day.  This activity day allows the pupils to mix with other young people from different schools and begin to work as a team on the High Ropes course and the Challenge Course.

After the activity days a number of the young people are invited to embark on the rest of the project. Over 8 weeks the group of young people will take part in life skills sessions facilitated by project staff covering topics such as team work, drugs awareness, peer pressure and handling conflict. Also during this time the young people will take part in a day out in a woodland forest or other outdoor setting to learn skills that will be valuable to them for the week long residential trip in the Lake District.

The week residential trip is based at EABC’s High Row residential centre in the Lake District. Young People will be instructed by qualified Mountain Leaders as they explore the hills and mountains of the area and gain valuable experiences and skills that will live with them for a long time. The project has seen countless young people return from the Lake District with a new self belief and confidence to achieve higher in and out of school.

At the end of the project all the young people take part in a presentation evening, which is designed to let the participants speak about and share their experiences as well as being congratulated on their achievements.
